Susamelle are one of Calabria's oldest Christmas sweets, and Sgambelluri makes them the traditional way in their family pastry shop on the Ionian coast. These soft, dense cookies are made with honey and warm spices like cinnamon and clove, plus a hint of orange. Then each one is coated in a layer of dark chocolate.

Pastry master Salvatore Sgambelluri opened his family's pasticceria in 1978 in Siderno, a seaside town on the Ionian coast of Calabria. Over four decades it has become one of the region's best-loved nougat makers, and today Salvatore runs it with his children.
